Victorian Funerals

Funeral processions led by pall bearers bearing batons, feathermen, pages and mutes who carried wands

The 1st coach was the hearse:-

  • Black with glass sides
  • Gold and silver decorations
  • Huge black ostrich feathers
  • Six black horses
  • Horses wore the ostrich feathers

Men wore full mourning suits and had crepe bands around their top hats

Mourning lengths

  • Spouse was 12 months
  • Child was 12 months
  • Parent was 12 months
  • Grandparents and siblings were mourned for six months
  • uncles and aunts were mourned for two month

A widow wore black crepe for the year, but in most other cases black crepe was worn for two-thirds of the mourning period.
